The Hoffer® Q formula has been published and is freely available to be used by anyone for non-commercial* purposes as long as the user is aware of the important errata (correction of errors) that was published in the January 2007 issue of the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.
However, the name Hoffer® is a registered trademark in the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office and may not be used in association with any commercial* product or software without first obtaining a license to do so by Dr. Hoffer.
The reason for this is simple. Errors have occurred in the past by manufacturer's programming of the Hoffer Q formula leading to disastrous clinical recommendations and thereby potentially harming patients and also injuring the reputation of the formula and its author. Obtaining a license requires allowing Dr. Hoffer to carefully test the product or software and assure that it is absolutely programmed correctly. When that is assured, a license is granted. The fee merely legally cements the agreement.
